Rewilding Glen Affric
My new book, published in September 2026, is the result of visiting Glen Affric for more than 50 years, and of the work that I carried out there as part of Trees for Life, the charity I founded in 1986, and which I was the Executive Director of for almost 30 years. In a very real sense the book represents the main work of my life, and has been under development and in the planning stages for a long time.
The book features detailed information about Glen Affric, which contains the third-largest remnant of the Caledonian Forest in Scotland. The first part of the book contains chapters about the various species that comprise the biodiversity of the forest, from Scots pine and aspen trees to flowering plants, fungi, birds and mammals. This reflects the fact that it is necessary to fully understand and know an ecosystem before beginning the work of rewilding, in order to return it to a condition of better health, with its full complement of native species in place again and all of its crucial ecological processes re-established.
The second part focuses on the practical work of ecological restoration there, and features 14 key Principles of Rewilding that have been developed over a period of many years. These are illustrated with examples of how they have been implemented through the forest recovery work in Glen Affric, that I’ve been involved with since 1989.
It features 175 outstanding colour photographs that illustrate both the remarkable biodiversity of the Caledonian Forest in Glen Affric, and the effectiveness of the rewilding work that has been carried out there.
The book is a large format paperback, measuring 16 x 23 cm, and has been produced and printed to a very high standard of quality.
